Natal Collective

Established in 2012, Natal Collective is an independent production and consultancy company registered in South Africa, and Sweden. Under the direction of Nkule Mabaso, the company operates internationally in the research, curation, and presentation of contemporary art and heritage projects. Natal Collective bridges contemporary artistic production with global audiences through five core areas of activity: curatorial services and exhibition management, art advisory and collection strategy, research and publishing, conference and event management, institutional reform and artist professional development. The practice brings together exhibition-making, critical writing, and public programming, with a particular focus on the politics of representation, decolonial aesthetics, and transnational solidarity. With a portfolio spanning the Venice Biennale, Kunsthalle KaDE, Michaelis Galleries, Durban Art Gallery, and community spaces across Southern Africa, Natal Collective bridges the institutional and the grassroots, producing projects that are both critically rigorous and socially embedded.

Natal Collective is ambitiously positioned to be a leading agency in the research, evaluation, and presentation of contemporary art internationally. We provide quality services across the performing, visual, and media arts, as well as the heritage sector, supporting the cultural production and representation.

 Dual-Entity Structure

South Africa  serves as the production and operations base, providing direct access to artists, low-cost production, and managing all artist relationships; studio visits and physical production are also managed from South Africa.
Sweden registration positions Natal Collective as a European cultural organisation with authentic African roots,  a powerful combination for institutional partnerships that wish to access the African creative economy.

Director Profile
Nkule Mabaso holds an MA in Curating from the Zurich University of the Arts and a BAFA from the University of Cape Town. Her practice emphasises collaboration, decolonial methodologies, and reimagining art’s social and political potential.
